FAIR WORK FIRST POLICY STATEMENT

A J Pottinger Ltd is committed to advancing the Scottish Government's Fair Work First policy. This policy, which balances the rights and responsibilities of employers and workers, provides an opportunity to generate benefits for employees.

Particular emphasis is placed upon the five dimensions of Fair Work as set out by the Fair Work Convention and how these are applied by A J Pottinger. These are:

Security – Providing security of employment, work and income:

As a small employer, all staff are employed on fixed term contracts we do not employ any staff on zero-hour contracts. We provide fair pay for our staff by paying the real living wage;  we offer flexible and family-friendly working practices for all workers from day one of employment and oppose the use of fire and rehire practices.

Statutory apprentice wages are lower than the minimum wage as a contribution to the cost of training, particularly in the earlier stages where apprentices may spend more time training than working. For the same reason we do not require apprentices to be paid the Living Wage.

Staff all have access to a workplace pension scheme and are entitled to statutory sick pay.

Respect – Respecting staff and recognising their standing and personal worth:

We attach great importance to ensuring that high standards of behaviour are demonstrated by all our staff.  Respect for everyone both within and outwith the workplace. We encourage staff to consider the concerns of others.

We have a Health and Safety Policy in place to provide and maintain safe and healthy working conditions for all our employees, providing appropriate tools, equipment, operational processes and safety of work covering all our activities.

Effective Voice – Providing a safe environment where workers’ views are sought out, listened to and can make a difference:

We are committed to enabling good communication and providing safe environments for workforce dialogue. We recognise trade unions, and all members of staff are made aware of their opportunity to become members. We have daily team talks to voice staff views and ideas.

As a small company, we have measures in place to support employees in the workplace and have zero tolerance of bullying and other forms of abuse and harassment.

Opportunity – Promoting access to work and opportunities for staff to progress within employment:

We are involved in apprenticeship programmes; continued training and development opportunities for staff. Our staff engage with diverse and local communities.

Fulfilment – Developing/maintaining a fulfilling work environment:

We place a high emphasis on workforce engagement to ensure our staff feel empowered and involved, where everyone’s opinion matters and people are encouraged to offer ideas for improvement.

We are committed to providing apprenticeships, and staff are supported to keep their professional qualifications and relevant training up to date including advanced training courses such as Heat Geek Mastery. As a small business we rely on effective skill and recognise the importance of continued professional development of all staff.

All employees receive induction training and training needs are reviewed as a result of job changes, promotion, and changes in technology.

A J Pottinger  employs a small staff of five and has agreed the contents of the statement in consultation with staff members.
